Ascension Climbing Medicine
Climbing Shouldn’t Hurt:
Most rock climbers feel that pain is a part of the sport.Their fingers get sore and swollen, their elbows hurt so bad that they can’t even hold a pencil correctly, or their knee clicks and won’t straighten completely. Most climbers also don’t want to do anything but climb. They train for climbing by climbing more, they rest from climbing by doing pull ups and hang-boards, and they stretch by pulling their fingers back every so often. Most of them want to be life-long climbers, but they don’t have the proper habits or perform the proper preventative care to maintain good health. Ascension Climbing Medicine is the answer to healthy lifelong climbing.
What makes the Ascension Climbing Program Special?
The Facility: Bodycentral Concussion and Sports Center is equipped with Keiser resistance training equipment, assisted pull-up devices, ropes and high level strength and conditioning equipment seen in most collegiate and professional venues.
Climbing Experienced Staff: Dr. Britt Linde has 10 years of experience in rock climbing, including bouldering, sport, and trad climbing. She has coached youth teams and taught individual climbing lessons as well. Throughout graduate school and her climbing career, she realized the dire need for education on injury prevention and rehabilitation in rock climbing. Since there is not much research devoted to this sport, and especially to injuries and rehabilitation, she sought out opportunities to push the field forward in this direction, lecturing at climbing gyms throughout Phoenix and now bringing what she has learned to Tucson. Dr. Linde has largely focused her career on treating injuries in climbers from recreational to elite levels.
Climbing-Specific Injuries: Rock climbing is an exhilarating sport that comes with its own set of injuries that are rarely seen anywhere else. Only at Bodycentral Physical Therapy can you expect to be evaluated by a Doctor of Physical Therapy who is familiar with treating injuries from pulley tears in the hand and shoulder dislocations to Belayer’s neck and ankle sprains.
Unique Approach: Ascension Climbing Medicine is the only program of its kind. Many health care professionals do not understand the demands of climbing and the stresses this sport places on joints, muscles, and tendons. There is often a disconnect between the climber’s and health care provider’s goals and expectations. Bodycentral bridges this gap by employing experts in the field of physical therapy and in the sport of rock climbing specifically. Our therapists will get you back to the crag faster, stronger, and smarter.
Injury prevention: Available to individual climbers as well as competitive teams. We use climbing-specific strength, flexibility, range of motion, and skills testing to identify weak areas and impairments in your movement. We evaluate your specific goals, medical history, and climbing level to create an individualized program to prevent injury.
Injury Rehabilitation: We utilize a combination of evidence-based treatments, our own clinical and climbing experience, and your personal goals to design rehabilitation programs fit for youth to adult climbers of all levels. You can expect manual therapy techniques including Graston technique,Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, dry needling, and joint mobilizations as well as neuromuscular re-education and strengthening of specific muscles and movements required by climbing to return you to the wall.
Performance Enhancement: Training at Bodycentral gives climbers the advantage of knowing they have trained hard and safely. We know that a medically guided full body approach to training gives climbers a safer approach to improve and continue climbing for life.
