What is a Vestibular Therapy? Vestibular Therapy is provided for clients who experience vertigo from various diseases. This specialized therapy works by giving your exercises to increase the dizziness in order to teach your brain to adapt to the decreased balance quicker. Therapy is provided in the form of exercises in the clinic and in a home exercise program (HEP). Exercises in the clinic are usually more complex requiring some equipment, but the home exercise program includes more basic exercises without equipment.
What to expect during treatment sessions. On your initial visit, the physical therapist (PT) will perform an evaluation to examine how the vestibular and balance systems are functioning. After the evaluation, a HEP will be provided to start the treatment progression. The initial visit will last about 30 minutes. During the following visits, the PT will instruct you in a program developed for your needs. Each subsequent visit will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
It is recommended to have someone drive you home from at least your first visit due to the possibility of worsened symptoms due to testing. This is normal and will subside a few hours later. Dizziness can increase after each treatment session as well, however the initial evaluation is usually the worst.
