ORTHOTICS
What is an orthotic?
An
orthotic is a custom made insert that is designed to support the foot and control
abnormal motion. By correcting excessive motion in the foot and ankle, the orthotic
can also affect movement at the knee, hip, pelvis, and back.
Who would need an orthotic?
Orthotics can be helpful to everyone from high level athletes with foot and
knee pain to the construction worker with arch pain. Pain in your foot, knee,
hip, or low back may be the result of a hidden problem with the structure and
function of your feet. Orthotics may help these problems by correcting and supporting
the motions of the feet.
What services does BODYCENTRAL Physical Therapy provide with regards
to orthotics?
The physical therapist with advanced training in the foot and ankle, and the
application of orthotics will perform an evaluation of your feet and legs, and
will talk to you about your activities and shoe wear before ordering the device.
This will ensure that you get the best possible fit, have the orthotic made
based on your specific problem and adapted for your
activities. Your
orthotic appointment will include taking measurements, analyzing how your body
moves, and making a cast impression of your feet. These casts are sent to a
laboratory, and your orthotics will arrive in approximately 2 weeks.
If it is determined that you do not need a custom orthotic, based on the severity
of the mechanical problems, your therapist will direct you to an appropriate
over-the-counter device. You will also receive counseling regarding footwear.
In addition to these things, you may receive manual therapy, exercises, and
a home program to get you back to your activities.
